A Notch Above Photography Club
Minutes
June 8, 2019
The meeting convened at 1:00 with Tim, Bob, Bill, Mike, and Scott in attendance.
A sequence of events is as follows:
Treasurer’s Report: Bob reported an ending statement balance of $255.20.
Discussed subjects for discussion at future meetings with the following results:
July: Scott: compare Topaz and ON1 Effects (showing the same images side by side and explaining how each program differs)
Bill: talking about a “favorite image”
Tim and TBD: Each will provide an unedited image and each will edit the same photo on their s/w of choice. Discussion and critique to follow
Aug: Bill: astral photography
Tim: B&W photography
Mike: 15 minute “Quick Share” about aspect ratio
Tim: red eye and cropping in ON1
Sep: TBD: discuss 1 or 2 key camera controls (e.g. a rehash of back button focusing or setting up for DOF), after which we adjourn to someplace like the antique car on Easton Rd. or to Coffin Pond for a field trip where we help each other practice these setups. If it’s the antique car, Bob volunteered to ask permission of the property owner. TBD: Bob will research the best month (with regard to flowers) and canvas members about the best day (not a club meeting day) for a field trip to St. Gaudens in Cornish, NH
Other topics of interest for meetings further out included: night photography, freezing motion, composition, long exposure photography, soft proofing, <advanced> printing techniques, HDR, using a tripod correctly, and repeats of camera controls – transform a photo from start to finish in ON1 — selections and masks in PS – and more on critiquing.
Members selected Mary W. as the winner of our monthly photo contest with her image titled “Reflected Sunset.”
Tim, Bob, and Scott presented information based on the theme “Ways to Minimize Post-Processing”
Tim: Equipment and Camera Features
Bob: Technique and Composition
Scott: Camera Settings
Recent meetings have included time for an examination of how to critique a photo. We’ve agreed that a combination of Feldman’s Classic Approach and that found monthly on On1 Plus would be most beneficial. (It might be useful to create a document with our selected criteria for each method.)
Bill presented Power Point slides and discussed enhancements to On1 recently released in ver 2019.5. Afterwards Bill showed a video by Matt K. to further detail performance and interface enhancements. Over the past months members are favoring On1 as THE go-to post-processing software of choice.
It should be noted that since our last meeting we’ve contacted several local newspapers to publicize our club in order to attract new members.
The meeting adjourned at 3:45.
